On vacation

Good-Bye to a Legend!

mj_ripWow, step out to go to the store and hear people in the store with  the radio turned up that Michael Jackson had just passed away from a heart attack. This is a horrible day. Two icons in one day. I just felt like somebody punched me in the gut when they told me that Michael Jackson had passed away. That was an incredible shock! I hope they reveal information later about what caused him to go into cardiac arrest. I can’t even listen to his music right now. Too much sadness in one day. May he also finally rest in peace now…he dealt with a lot in his life especially from an industry that built him up to tear him down. Though he left this earth prematurely…..no one can dispute the incredible legacy he left behind.

New BCBGirls Kicks

I got these BCBGirls Platforms from Dillards on Sales for $49.  I love the extra multi-weave detail around the heel area.  I think these would be great to wear with a solid colored dress and a tan braided belt.

Also good-bye to an Angel. Farrah Fawcett passed away today after a three year battle with cancer. She was 62. I use to love to watch this show with my sister. I was 13 then Charlie’s Angel’s debuted on TV, that was one of my favorite show. Cancer is a beast! I personally know so many people who have fallen to this plaque. If I hear about one more person, I tell ya I don’t know what I’m going to do. Its either heart disease, diabetes complications or cancer. The three big killer. Here is youtube clip from Charlie’s Angel. May she rest in peace.

Why Tailoring Your Clothing is Justifiable

tailorSometimes you come across a nice piece, but the sizing of the garment is an issue. You may need to shorten the hem, the sleeves, add extra button holes, take in the shoulder area, etc. You buy it anyway but don’t know how you can make it work? Well, sometimes professional tailoring is warranted, especially if you’re not a skilled seamstress. Taking the “leap” by trying to do the alterations yourself and you have no sewing experience…….it could easily end up looking like a “hack and cut” job and you can ruin the garment.
Especially if it’s a designer piece, something that you value, one-of-kind vintage or at some point an item you would like to resell. Even if you paid $12 for the dress — if the alterations are $50 but it updates the look or gives you a perfect fit – it’s worth it! You took a $12 ill-fitting dress, invested a few dollars into the piece with the alterations and now its worth more then that to you.

Sewing is a lot of attention-to-detail kind of work, so you have to compensate people for the amount of time it takes to make those type of adjustments. In my opinion, if a person does not have any knowledge of what it takes to prepare and sew a garment they don’t “value” the work that is being done and/or understand the justification for the cost.

The benefits of professional alterations is that you will wear the item more and the fit of the garment will be improved. The one-time cost will work itself out on the back -end because of your ability to get more wear out of it – not to mention that it would still be a viable piece for resell. Once you screw up a piece by cutting it up and not keeping the garment integrity, it’s now a rag or $0.25 giveaway for a yard sale.

Don’t destroy your clothing by haphazardly cutting them up with no sense of what you are doing. A professional will know where to take in the garment around the seams, where to add darts or remove darts, give you a even hemline, add button hole or a zipper where needed, etc. If you don’t have the money for the alterations – then you should pass on the garment or put it away until you have the extra dough for the work to be done correctly.
I’ve had to pass on items sometimes myself (and I sew) because for me it might be too labor intensive and I don’t have the time to make those type of alterations. I usually just stick to minor fixes. However, if its something I absolutely love and it needs quite a few adjustments, I would definitely pay for the alterations that I don’t have the time to do myself. Now once it’s done, you try the garment on and the fit is spot on — you’ll be glad you made the investment.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21st

This is a yet another dress I got from DOTS.com (I love, love that store) I think this dress was either $16 or $18. So cute. Its denim with a kind of apron top with a wrap around the waist. I love the extra stitch detailing around the bodice, and how nice to add the front pockets as well.

You could not sew or find this dress vintage on-line for that price! It holds the “girls” in nicely which is always a plus in my book. This is officially my “little denim dress”.

Closet Organization

closet1
closet2 Now that my son has moved into his own apartment off campus, I have taken over his room. YEAH! I have a small closet in the master bedroom and my son’s room has the bigger closet, how crazy is that! So now I can move a lot of my clothing off of the two garment racks I had in my den and transition them into my son’s room that I plan to convert into a dressing room / office.

I plan to post pics of the room layout so I can get some suggestions from you guys. I have moved my clothing into the room as well as my desk and a white daybed I bought from a Yard Sale for $20 bucks (how great is that right). I have not set-up the daybed because I need to purchase a twin size mattress for it.
I’m looking for ideas on how to organize my shoes, belts and handbags to make more room on the top shelves for the rest of my clothes ( many are still in garment bags and boxes under my bed and in my more boxes in my garage) and I have more shoes in boxes that not visible. Arrrggg!

SUNDAY, JUNE 14TH

This is what I wore to service today.  I got this dress from Kmart for $24. I absolutely love it ladies! Totally 50’s vibe with a fresh floral print and a nice bit of stretch to it so it fits around those curves. I took this pic before I could put on my small pearl drop necklace. I wouldn’t do any other accessories because the print is very bold, hence why I also kept the belt and shoes the same color.

I altered mine a bit by making my dress more of a pencil fit on the bottom vs their straight cut on the skirt portion of the dress. Very much improved! I seriously need some new red pumps! I bought a pair a few posts back but they were too wide for my feet so now I’m back to square one.

Lenya from Fashion-Loving Stylist commented that this pic brought to mind Mad Men and I have to agree. Only thing missing is the frame straw bag, gloves and the martini glass. LOL
